This document is the canonical privacy policy for Castaway Sky (iOS / iPadOS app). It is published in English first, with a Japanese translation immediately below.

English

Castaway Sky estimates your position on Earth from the stars, the sun, and the moon, without GPS or a network.

1. Summary

Castaway Sky collects no data.

• No location services, no account, no ads, no analytics.
• The camera and the motion sensors are used only on this device, to estimate your position from the sky. Photos and positions are not saved, and nothing leaves the device.
• SUN & MOON FIX keeps your sights on this device until you clear them with CLEAR or delete the app: the time, the measured altitude and related measurement values of the sun or the moon, your answers about where the sun and the moon were at their highest (north or south of you), and the device model. They are not included in backups.
• The display color chosen in SETTINGS is kept in the app's settings on this device.
• Photos opened with LOAD PHOTO or LOAD FILE are analyzed on this device and not saved. The app reads the photo's date and camera information; location data in the photo is not read.
• The only network use is TIP JAR. While it is open, the app asks the App Store for the tip prices. Purchases are processed by Apple under Apple's privacy policy. The app does not record whether you sent a tip.

The same summary is shown in the app under MENU > ABOUT.

2. Camera and motion sensors

The app uses the back camera to photograph the night sky, the sun, and the moon, and the motion sensors to read the direction of gravity and the motion of the device. Images and sensor readings are processed in memory on the device to compute a position, and are discarded afterwards. The app shows no camera preview and does not save photos to your library.

3. Data stored on the device

• Sights (SUN & MOON FIX): the values listed in the summary, kept in the app's own storage on the device so that you can add sights hours apart. Up to 20 sights are kept. They are excluded from iCloud and computer backups.
• Display color (SETTINGS): red or green, kept in the app's settings on the device until you delete the app.
• How to delete: tap CLEAR in SUN & MOON FIX, or delete the app.
• Nothing else is saved. Positions, photos, and the inputs of MANUAL FIX and SKY CHART are kept only while the app is open.

4. Information we do not collect

Castaway Sky does not collect the following.

• Your location. The app does not use Location Services and never asks for location permission. GPS data in photos is not read.
• Advertising identifiers (IDFA) or persistent device identifiers.
• Contacts, microphone, or health data.
• Analytics, crash reports, or advertising. No third-party analytics, crash-reporting, advertising, or tracking SDKs are integrated.

5. Network and in-app purchases (StoreKit)

All navigation features work without a network. The only network use is TIP JAR, which offers optional tips through Apple StoreKit. Tips unlock nothing. Purchases are processed by Apple, and we never receive credit card numbers, names, or addresses. The app does not record whether you sent a tip.

6. Children's privacy

Castaway Sky is rated 4+ (suitable for all ages) in the App Store. We do not intentionally collect personal information from users of any age.

7. Prohibited uses for AI training

Use of Castaway Sky's original text, screen images, and other assets to train generative AI models is prohibited. This does not limit the open-source components and data included in the app under their own licenses (listed in MENU > LICENSES).

8. Change history

If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page is updated.
